Britemy signature
Britemy's Signature Methods for Cambridge YLE
Preparing for Cambridge Young Learners English is a long journey for a primary school child. We shape it to feel like play with a patient conversation partner.
Cambridge itself maps YLE Starters to roughly pre-A1, Movers to A1, and Flyers to A2 on the CEFR ladder (the European proficiency scale that runs from beginner A1 through advanced C2). Britemy tutors use this as a compass, so we avoid skipping stages too quickly.
Total Physical Response for action vocabulary
When your child learns jump, clap, or touch your nose, the tutor moves along. Muscles help memory, and words stick longer than they would on paper. This suits Starters, which centers on picture-based instructions.
Thematic story-time aligned with the YLE syllabus
Each Cambridge YLE ladder has required themes (animals, family, school, sports). The tutor prepares picture stories on that theme, your child listens first, mimics, then invents their own version. Vocabulary grows through living stories that stay in memory.
Gentle phonics drills for tricky sounds
Sounds like th, v, and the schwa (the weak vowel in banana) often trip up Indonesian children. The tutor slips in 5-minute drills each session using sound cards and child-friendly tongue twisters, so YLE Speaking later comes out clean and easy on the ear.
Examiner roleplay from the middle of the program
From around session 10, the tutor occasionally switches chairs and plays a friendly Cambridge examiner. Your child practices greeting, answering picture questions, and closing politely. YLE Speaking scenarios feel familiar, so exam day never feels like meeting a stranger.
- YLE StartersFirst hello, roughly 100 to 150 hours of guided study
- YLE MoversStep up, roughly 175 to 200 cumulative hours
- YLE FlyersPeak of Young Learners, roughly 250 to 300 cumulative hours
- After FlyersYour child is ready for the Cambridge teen track or continued general fluency
Hour estimates are general Cambridge references, offered as a reasonable range. Every child moves at a different pace, and Britemy adjusts session tempo so your child stays comfortable.

Three Cambridge Young Learners English Ladders

Method
How Britemy Prepares Your Child for Cambridge YLE
We do not jump into practice papers in the first session. Your child first falls in love with the language, then meets the Cambridge Young Learners English assessment format at a comfortable pace.
Warm intro session with level mapping
The WhatsApp consultation lets a Britemy tutor say hello, play a picture-guessing game, and gauge where your child stands: ready to start at Starters, comfortable at Movers, or ripe for Flyers. There are no stressful tests, just conversation and light activities.
Build speaking confidence through songs, stories, and play
Before touching any YLE format worksheet, the tutor invites your child to use English for fun things: singing along, playing animal roles, and reading picture stories about family, colors, and numbers. This is the speaking-first foundation, so your child dares to reply when the YLE examiner says hello later.
Introduce YLE assessment format layer by layer
Closer to the exam, the tutor breaks the Cambridge YLE format into digestible parts: Listening (match pictures to names), Reading and Writing (build sentences from words), Speaking (tell a picture story to the examiner). Your child meets the format in relaxed sessions, so exam day feels familiar.
Mini simulations every 4 to 6 sessions
Every few sessions we run a 15-minute mini simulation modeled after Cambridge Young Learners examiner style: gentle instructions, colorful pictures, no scary grading. The tutor notes which parts flow smoothly and which need extra practice, then shapes next week's plan.
Monthly progress report for parents
At the end of each month we send a clear summary: new vocabulary your child owns, sounds that have improved, Speaking scenarios answered in full, plus targets for the coming weeks. You see exactly how skills are stacking up toward exam day.
A calming lead-up to exam day
Two weeks before the exam, the tutor rehearses the walk into the test room with your child: greeting the examiner with a smile, politely asking for a repeat when unclear, and closing the Speaking part with a thank you. Exam day feels like a slightly tidier version of a normal lesson.

Curriculum
Cambridge YLE Curriculum Map per Ladder
YLE Starters module

The second ladder, for children comfortable with short sentences, usually 8 to 10 years old. The Cambridge Movers exam runs about 60 minutes with short reading passages and picture stories. We emphasize forming complete sentences and telling ordered mini stories.
- Movers Listening: follow short stories, catch names and numbers
- Movers Reading and Writing: understand short paragraphs, fill missing words
- Movers Speaking: compare two similar pictures, tell a sequence of events
- Vocabulary themes: hobbies, school subjects, weather, sports, body parts
YLE Flyers module
The highest Cambridge Young Learners ladder, for children 10 to 12 years old. The Flyers exam lasts about 75 minutes with longer texts and creative writing tasks. We prepare your child to read full stories, share simple opinions, and write structured short paragraphs.
- Flyers Listening: follow longer conversations, pull out specific facts
- Flyers Reading and Writing: illustrated texts of 6 to 8 sentences, write mini stories of 20 to 25 words
- Flyers Speaking: tell picture-strip stories, answer simple opinion questions
- Vocabulary themes: adventures, travel, jobs, health, basic environment
Bridging module after Flyers
Once Flyers is complete, children who want to keep climbing usually aim for Cambridge A2 Key for Schools. We build the base grammar, early teen vocabulary themes, and longer speaking practice. If a formal next step is not the goal, your child can continue in the general English for Kids program to keep fluency alive.
- Grammar refresher: simple present, past, and future
- Early teen vocabulary themes: friendship, hobbies, school life
- Mini public speaking: 2-minute talk with picture support
- Writing practice of 40 to 60 words on everyday topics

Readiness Check
Is Your Child Ready for Cambridge YLE?
A light checklist to gauge where your child stands today. You do not need every box ticked, this is just a starting point for a first conversation with the Britemy curation team.
Ready to start YLE Starters
- Your child knows letters A to Z and can name them
- Can focus for 15 to 20 minutes on a lively activity
- Dares to answer with one word when spoken to in English
- A parent is willing to spend 5 minutes recapping after each session
Better fit for YLE Movers
- Your child can read short sentences with support
- Owns basic vocabulary for animals, colors, family, and numbers
- Answers Yes or No questions with a short reason
- Knows the simple present tense through phrases like I like, I have
Ready to go straight to YLE Flyers
- Your child can read a 4 to 6 sentence text and retell it
- Uses more than 200 active vocabulary items for daily life
- Distinguishes present, past, and future in simple sentences
- Presents for 1 to 2 minutes in front of the tutor with confidence
Native vs Local
Native or Local Tutor for Your Child? We Are Honest
Many parents ask: is native better than local? Britemy's answer is not absolute, it depends on your child's goals and age. Here is an honest per-dimension comparison so you can decide with a clear head.
Truly native accent (US, UK, AU) from birth. Your child picks up natural rhythm quickly.
Clean international accent (C1-C2 CEFR), TESOL/CELTA trained. Local alumni tutors from abroad are equivalent.
If accent is your priority, native fits. For early ages, accent is not the main goal.
Untrained native may not understand Indonesian child dynamics (Bahasa Indonesia mother tongue, cultural character).
Indonesian local tutor understands child context: when shy, when tired, when to switch activity. Natural empathy.
For ages 3-9, local tutor is more adaptive. Native is a choice after your child is confident.
Native understands grammar intuitively but may not explain STRUCTURE to Indonesian learners.
Local tutor learned grammar as foreign language, can explain "why" using Bahasa Indonesia structure reference.
For grammar clinic, local tutor is more effective. Native fits for usage drilling.
Some natives reflexively correct constantly, making children afraid to speak. TESOL-trained natives are more patient.
Local tutor generally more patient with silent period and early mispronunciation.
For building early courage, local tutor is friendlier. Switch to native after confidence builds.
Most natives cannot speak Bahasa Indonesia, cannot bridge critical instructions.
Local tutor can switch to Bahasa Indonesia if child stuck totally, but minimally (5-10% total session).
Ages 3-7 need occasional Bahasa Indonesia bridge. Local is more suitable.
Native fee 1.5-2x local, timezone can be issue if based abroad.
Local tutor fee more affordable, same timezone.
For consistent weekly sessions, local tutor is more sustainable long-term.
For children aged 3-9, Britemy default recommends TESOL/CELTA-certified local tutors. After your child is confident speaking (usually B1+), you can request native sessions for accent exposure. We are transparent: our local tutor quality is at a level that can bridge to native accent without loss of teaching quality.
Britemy does not sell the "native speaker" mystique. We sell teaching processes suited to your child. WhatsApp us for best-match tutor consultation.

Parent Guide
How Parents Support Kids Learning English at Home
A 60-minute Britemy session is maximised when your child gets English exposure outside class. Here are 5 light activities you can do with your child, no need to be fluent yourself.
Every morning before school Weather Report 3 Minutes
Ask your child to look outside, then "How is the weather today?". Child answers with simple words (sunny, rainy, cloudy). Gently correct if wrong.
After school Recap Day 10 Minutes
Ask your child in English: "What did you do today?", "Who did you play with?", "What did you eat for lunch?". Child answers what they can, you add vocabulary when stuck.
Afternoon or evening Reading 20 Minutes
Read graded English chapter books (Roald Dahl, junior Percy Jackson, Enid Blyton). Child reads 1 page, you read 1 page. Note new words in a notebook.
Weekends English Movie or Series
Watch Disney/Pixar/Netflix with English subtitles. Ask your child to retell the plot in English for 3 minutes after the film.
Daily routine English Mealtime Chat
During family dinner, spend 5 to 10 minutes on light topics in English (favorite films, hobbies, weekend plans). You join in with English as best you can.
What to do
- Celebrate small wins (new words, first sentences without hesitation)
- Consistent 15 to 30 minutes English exposure daily
- Follow up themes learned in Britemy sessions
- Provide access to English books and films regularly
- WhatsApp the tutor when unsure of home strategy
- Let your child hear various accents (US, UK, AU) so ears get used to it
× What to avoid
- Do not correct grammar every sentence, child becomes afraid to speak
- Do not force English when tired or stressed
- Do not compare your child's progress with friends or cousins
- Do not rely only on Britemy sessions without home practice
- Do not shut off Bahasa Indonesia, bilingual is healthy for the brain
- Do not make English a punishment or excessive reward
You get monthly progress reports from your Britemy tutor, plus vocabulary logs you can use for home review.
Tutor credentials
The Certifications We Look For
Every Britemy Cambridge YLE tutor passes a layered curation. We check international certifications, Young Learners teaching experience, and a consultation session with our kids coordinator.
TESOL
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. Recognized across borders as proof that a tutor is grounded in modern language teaching methodology.
CELTA
Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults, awarded by Cambridge. The name mentions adults, yet many CELTA holders also train in Young Learners pedagogy.
TEFL
Teaching English as a Foreign Language. A popular certification for tutors teaching outside English-speaking countries.
Cambridge YLE workshops
Some tutors attend Cambridge Assessment English workshops focused on Starters, Movers, and Flyers.
Young Learners experience
A minimum of 2 years teaching children ages 6 to 12 before being trusted as a Britemy YLE preparation tutor.
Certifications are only listed when the tutor actually holds them. We refuse to claim credentials that do not exist.
Sound Practice
English Sounds Practiced in Kids Class
Four foundational sounds that make your child more confident speaking English. Practice through songs, picture cards, and sound guessing. No jargon, just fun.
TH sound (thin, this)
Often becomes "tin" or "dis"
Tongue tip out slightly between teeth, blow gently. Tutor shows using mirror or video so your child sees themselves.
V sound (very, five)
Often pronounced "fery" or "wery"
Upper teeth gently bite lower lip, make voice vibrate. Your child can touch their throat to check the vibration.
SH sound (she, ship)
Sometimes becomes "see" or "sip"
Lips slightly forward and rounded, tongue up to palate. Sound is like shushing a cat.
Long EE sound (see, sheep)
Sometimes becomes short "sit" or "ship"
Mouth in wide smile, tongue front high. Sound is long, like singing "eeeeee".
Kids sessions always mix sounds with songs and games. Your child does not memorise IPA, just practices sounds through fun repetition.
Why Britemy
Why Parents Choose Britemy for Cambridge YLE
One tutor per child, full attention
Your child does not share the hour with other students, so the tutor focuses on the exact parts that need work. This suits shy learners as well as children who tire easily in group settings.
Tutors curated for the primary school segment
The Britemy curation team selects tutors with real Young Learners teaching experience, patience for small tantrums, and familiarity with Cambridge YLE format. TESOL, CELTA, or TEFL certified when available.
Fluency-first method with YLE format layered in over time
We avoid throwing exam simulations at your child from day one. The early months focus on speaking confidence and joy in the language. Cambridge format is trained systematically closer to the exam date.
Schedules that match your family's rhythm
Sessions can run after school in the afternoon, in the early evening, or on weekend mornings. Rescheduling via WhatsApp is available up to 3 hours ahead of your slot without any penalty, so a tired child is never forced to study.

Honest monthly progress reports
You receive a monthly summary: new vocabulary, sounds that improved, Speaking scenarios answered fully, plus next week's plan. There are no promises of instant fluency, only a credible map of progress.
Free tutor swap if the match is off

Trial Session Preview
A Cambridge YLE Consultation Session
This is what typically happens in the free WhatsApp consultation for your child. Short, warm, and enough to feel the tutor's style before committing.
Minutes 0 to 5: warm hello and mood check
The tutor greets your child with a smile, introduces themselves in very simple English, and starts a color-guessing card game. You are welcome to stay nearby so your child feels safe at the start.
Minutes 5 to 12: picture vocabulary activity
The tutor opens a set of animal-themed picture cards (or another theme matching your child's interests). Together they name the animals, mimic sounds, and build simple sentences like I can see a cat. Your child listens, repeats, then tries alone without harsh correction.
Minutes 12 to 22: mini story and mini Speaking
The tutor tells a short story from two sequential pictures, then asks back: Who is this? What is he doing? Your child answers as best they can. This closely mirrors Cambridge Movers or Flyers Speaking format, just in a relaxed version. The tutor notes strengths and areas to work on.
Minutes 22 to 27: mini Listening game
The tutor gives simple instructions (Point to the dog, Show me something blue) and your child responds. This resembles YLE Starters Listening without feeling like a quiz. Your child usually laughs as the instructions get faster.
Minutes 27 to 30: recap and quick word with parents
The tutor sums up for you: which ladder your child fits best (Starters or Movers), an ideal weekly rhythm, and a rough sense of how many months before your child is ready for the official exam. Your child gets praised for their courage and takes home a small challenge.
