Thesis statement

The main claim you set out to prove throughout an essay or chapter. It usually appears at the end of the opening paragraph and steers the rest of the argument.

HedgingA technique for softening claims so they sound objective, using phrases such as may indicate, tends to, or in some cases, in place of stating something as an absolute truth.

ParaphrasingRewriting an idea from a source with different vocabulary, structure, and perspective, always paired with a citation. Three consecutive words from the source usually require quotation marks.

APA (American Psychological Association)A citation style common in the social sciences, education, and psychology. In text citations show author and year, for example (Smith, 2020).

IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers)The standard citation style in engineering and computer science. In text citations appear as numbers in square brackets, such as [1], with a numbered reference list.
