Britemy signatures

IELTS Foundation Tutors Who Understand Academic Language

Britemy IELTS preparation tutors are academic English teachers who understand the difference between building a language foundation and drilling question strategy. We match you with a tutor focused on the language layer, while test strategy is handled by Exademy as our Akselera ecosystem partner.

Many Indonesian IELTS candidates get stuck at band 5 to 6 because the real issue is a language foundation that has yet to mature, well beyond test strategy. Britemy closes that language gap through one-on-one coaching across all four skills, so candidates walk into a mock test room at Exademy with a language grasp that is ready to have its strategy sharpened.

1

Graded academic passage bank

We curate a graded academic passage bank from 500 to 900 words on science, history, social, and environmental topics that frequently appear on IELTS Academic reading tests. You practice reading with a difficulty gradient that rises alongside your readiness.

2

Speaking part 2 cue card library

The cue card bank includes personal experience, description of a place, memorable event, favourite object, and opinion topics that mirror the IELTS cue card pool. You practice two-minute monologues with fluency and coherence feedback from your tutor every week.

3

Descriptive vocabulary for graphs

IELTS Academic task 1 demands specific descriptive vocabulary for rising trends, falling trends, fluctuation, and graph peaks. Your tutor coaches precise verbs and adverbs such as surge, plateau, decline gradually, so your description sounds accurate and varied.

4

Task 2 essay opinion hedging

A task 2 essay calls for a balanced and hedged opinion to sound academic. Your tutor coaches hedging phrases such as it can be argued that, one could suggest, this may indicate, so your essay avoids sounding too subjective or overclaiming.

IELTS foundation ladder your Britemy tutor helps you climb
  1. DiagnosticYour starting English map
  2. Reading and listeningReceptive academic skill foundation
  3. Writing and speakingProductive academic skill foundation
  4. Test prep referralMove to Exademy for score strategy

You can start at any point that matches your current language readiness. The initial diagnostic helps decide which area needs the most reinforcement before intensive test prep begins.

Tutor credentials

Britemy Tutor Standards for IELTS Foundation Preparation

Britemy IELTS preparation tutors are curated through teaching interviews, academic material tests, and verification of experience with both IELTS Academic and General Training candidates. We stay transparent about the tutor profile that will accompany you.

  • TESOL, CELTA, or TEFL

Most Britemy IELTS foundation tutors hold one of these three internationally recognised English teaching certifications.

  • Academic English experience

Our tutors have taught academic English at local universities or study-abroad preparation institutions, so they are familiar with the language texture IELTS tests.

  • Familiar with IELTS band descriptors

Although Britemy does not drill questions, our tutors understand the four IELTS speaking and writing criteria (fluency, lexical resource, grammatical range, pronunciation or task achievement, coherence, and so on) so practice stays on target.

  • Exademy referral coordination

Britemy tutors know the scope of Exademy as our sister test prep brand, so the recommendation to move from foundation to question drilling arrives at the right moment based on your language readiness.

Britemy does not promise a specific IELTS band. We prepare the language foundation that makes you more ready for the test prep strategy delivered elsewhere.

Method

How Britemy Builds Your IELTS Foundation

Our method prepares a mature understanding of the language before you step into intensive question drilling. Your tutor builds the five key IELTS areas through contextual practice, so when you arrive at a test prep strategy class at Exademy the language layer no longer trips you up.

01

Initial language readiness diagnostic

In the first session your tutor maps your current English level, covering academic reading comprehension, lecture listening speed, paragraph writing ability, and speaking fluency. The diagnostic result becomes the practice map for every following session, so the foundation grows from a real starting point instead of an assumption.

02

Reading academic passage building

You practice reading academic texts close in length to IELTS Academic passages of 700 to 900 words. Your tutor coaches skimming for the big picture, scanning for specific detail, and grasping the writer's argument. Academic vocabulary is explained alongside example sentences so words stick in memory longer.

03

Listening lecture comprehension

You listen to academic lecture recordings, academic monologues, and campus context conversations. Your tutor guides you to recognise a lecturer's argument signals, transitions between points, and the specific details often asked about. Pace practice follows the speed of an international campus lecture.

04

Writing task 1 graph and task 2 essay

You practice writing IELTS Academic task 1 responses that describe graphs, tables, diagrams, or maps, plus task 2 academic opinion essays. Your tutor coaches paragraph structure, sentence cohesion, descriptive vocabulary for graph trends, and layered argument for opinion essays.

05

Speaking part 1 through part 3

You practice all three parts of IELTS speaking: personal conversation in part 1, a two-minute monologue with a cue card in part 2, and abstract topic discussion in part 3. Your tutor coaches fluency, vocabulary range, grammatical accuracy, and pronunciation aligned with the four IELTS band descriptor criteria.

06

Progress reflection and test prep referral

Once the foundation across all four skills feels mature enough, your tutor recommends you move to Exademy for intensive question drilling, mock test scoring simulation, and the timing strategy needed as your test date approaches. The referral is an honest part of the best learning path.

Native vs Local

Native or Local Tutor for Your Academic English?

For academic needs (thesis, journal, conference), tutor choice depends on your field and publication target. Here is honest comparison.

Accent and pronunciation
Native

Truly native for international conference presentations. Plus value for overseas defense.

Local

Local tutor from abroad already equivalent for academic setting.

Britemy pick

Native if conference presentation target. Local sufficient for writing and discussion.

Academic writing style
Native

Native understands academic tone naturally (hedge language, cautious claim, formal register).

Local

Local tutor with PhD/publication experience understands academic writing, sometimes more structured.

Britemy pick

Both fit. Prioritise tutor with publication track record; native status is a secondary consideration.

Paragraph structure explanation
Native

Native intuitive, may not break down pattern (topic sentence, evidence, transition).

Local

TESOL/CELTA-trained local tutor good at explaining paragraph structure with concrete template.

Britemy pick

Local more pedagogical for beginners. Native for polish at advanced stage.

Field-specific vocabulary
Native

Ex-academic native understands field vocab. Look for one matching your field.

Local

Local tutor with your field background (science, law, economics) more relevant.

Britemy pick

More important: field experience, not native status.

Citation and referencing
Native

Native understands APA/MLA/Chicago naturally.

Local

Local tutor from abroad already familiar. Some can explain regional nuance (APA 7 vs 6).

Britemy pick

Both fit if tutor has peer review experience.

Fee and consistency
Native

Fee 1.5-2x local.

Local

Affordable fee, consistent.

Britemy pick

For 6-12 month thesis/publication program, local more sustainable.

Britemy Pick

Britemy default local tutor with publication/research track record in your field. Periodic native sessions to polish conference presentation or final proofreading. For IELTS Academic 7+ or TOEFL 100+ scores, transition to Exademy after fluency foundation solid.

Academic mentoring quality determined by tutor research experience, not native status. We match tutor to your field of study.

Pertanyaan Umum

Questions IELTS Candidates Often Ask

Does Britemy guarantee I get IELTS band 7 after the course?
No, Britemy does not promise a specific IELTS band achievable within a specific timeframe. We focus on the four skill English language foundation (reading, listening, writing, speaking) that becomes your footing for question drilling at test prep. For specific target scores such as band 7 and above, plus timing strategy and mock test scoring, please consult Exademy as our sister test prep brand in the Akselera ecosystem, purpose built for target score strategy.
What is the difference between Britemy and Exademy for IELTS preparation?
Britemy builds the four skill English language foundation that becomes IELTS test material: academic reading, academic lecture listening, writing task 1 and task 2, plus speaking part 1 through part 3. Exademy trains test-taking strategy: Cambridge IELTS question drilling, mock test scoring simulation with band prediction, and per-section timing tactics. The combination is the ideal pattern: Britemy for three to six months for the foundation, then Exademy two to three months before test date for strategy drilling.
When is the best time to start Britemy before taking IELTS?
Ideally three to six months before your test date. Britemy builds the four skill English foundation first, then you move to Exademy two to three months before the exam for intensive question drilling and mock test simulation. If your language foundation is already strong at the start (say B2 and above), the Britemy duration can be shorter and focus only on the weakest area.
Do Britemy tutors know the latest IELTS question format?
Our tutors are familiar with the IELTS format and band descriptors, so foundation practice points toward the material that appears on the test. Britemy does not drill Cambridge IELTS questions or provide mock test scoring. For simulation of the latest question format, per-section timing, and band prediction, please consult Exademy as our sister test prep brand in the Akselera ecosystem.
I need IELTS General Training for migration. Can Britemy help?
Yes, Britemy builds the language foundation relevant to both modules: Academic and General Training. The main differences sit in the writing task 1 type (academic graph versus formal or informal letter) and the reading texture (academic text versus lifestyle or work material). Your tutor adapts practice material to the module you target. For migration-specific question drilling, we still direct you to Exademy.
How long do I need at Britemy before moving to Exademy?
It depends on your starting level, hours of study per week, and how often you practise at home. Candidates at B1 who take three to four sessions per month usually begin to feel the foundation strengthen within four to six months. Candidates at B2 and above can be far shorter, perhaps two to three months focused on weak areas only. The initial diagnostic helps map a realistic duration for you.
Are session recordings available for solo revision?
Session recordings can be requested before a session starts, especially for speaking cue card simulation or writing feedback sessions that reward a rewatch. The file is shared via email or an agreed shared drive. For open discussion sessions, the recording is optional so you feel comfortable speaking openly without self-consciousness.
How does Britemy train IELTS Academic writing task 1 graphs?
Your tutor coaches you to recognise the four visual types that appear on task 1 Academic: line graph, bar chart, pie chart, and process diagram. You practice writing a two-sentence overview that captures the most striking trend, then a detailed body that groups data logically. Trend vocabulary widens gradually from basic words such as increase and decrease toward specific verbs such as surge, plateau, and taper off. Your tutor gives feedback on task achievement, coherence, lexical resource, and grammatical range aligned with IELTS band descriptor criteria.

Pronunciation Drill

English Sounds Indonesian Speakers Find Tricky

Eight sounds that most often cause miscommunication for Indonesian English speakers. Britemy sessions train articulation concretely with IPA and minimal pairs, not by chasing native accents.

/θ/

Voiceless TH

Often swapped with /t/ or /s/

Tongue tip slightly out between upper and lower teeth, breathe out without vocal cord vibration.

Minimal pairs
think vs sink vs tinkthin vs sin vs tinthree vs tree vs freeboth vs boat vs bosspath vs pass vs pat
thinkthankthreethirtythousandbirthdayauthormouth
/ð/

Voiced TH

Often swapped with /d/ or /z/

Same tongue position as /θ/, but vibrate vocal cords. Sound is more vibratory and shorter.

Minimal pairs
this vs disthat vs datthey vs dayfather vs fadderbrother vs brudder
thethisthattheytherefathermothereither
/v/

V labiodental

Often pronounced /f/ or even /w/

Upper teeth touch inside of lower lip, vibrate vocal cords. Different from /f/ (no vibration), different from /w/ (rounded lips).

Minimal pairs
very vs fery vs weryvine vs fine vs winevest vs fest vs westvan vs fan vs wanvary vs fairy vs wary
veryvaluevideoviewvoiceinvitetravelseven
/ə/

Schwa

The most common sound in English but often ignored

Mouth fully relaxed, tongue central, neutral short "uh" sound. Appears in unstressed syllables.

Minimal pairs
about /əbaʊt/ not /a-bout/banana /bənænə/ not /ba-na-na/sofa /soʊfə/ not /so-fa/again /əgɛn/ not /a-gain/photograph /foʊtəgræf/
aboutagainagoballoonbutterchickenlemonocean
/ʃ/ vs /s/

SH vs S

SH often pronounced as S in words like "she"

For /ʃ/: lips slightly rounded and pushed forward, tongue up to palate. For /s/: lips smiling, tongue near teeth.

Minimal pairs
she vs seesheep vs seepshine vs signshoes vs sueswash vs was
sheshipshineshallwashpushfishnation
/ɪ/ vs /iː/

Short I vs Long EE

Bit vs beat, ship vs sheep often sound the same

For /ɪ/: short, tongue mid-high, mouth less wide. For /iː/: long, tongue front high, mouth in a wide smile.

Minimal pairs
ship vs sheepbit vs beatlive vs leavesit vs seatfill vs feel
shipsheepbitbeatsitseatliveleave
/æ/

Short A open

Does not exist in Indonesian, often becomes /e/ or /a/

Open mouth wide as if yawning, tongue front low. Sound is long and "flat".

Minimal pairs
cat vs cut vs cotbad vs bed vs budsad vs said vs sudran vs run vs renman vs men vs mun
catapplebadhappyplansathaveland
/-d/ vs /-t/ vs /-ɪd/

Ending -ed past tense

Often pronounced "walk-ed" should be "walkt"

After voiceless consonant (walk, kiss): /-t/. After voiced consonant (love, live): /-d/. After /t/ /d/ (want, need): /-ɪd/.

Minimal pairs
walked /wɔːkt/ (not wolk-ed)kissed /kɪst/loved /lʌvd/played /pleɪd/wanted /wɒntɪd/
walkedkissedwatchedlovedplayedwantedneededstarted

Britemy does not train you to mimic a native accent. What we train: sounds that cause miscommunication (thin becoming tin, ship becoming sheep). After 20-30 consistent sessions, these distinctions become natural.

Stories from Candidates Learning at Britemy

Britemy trained my reading and listening foundation across three months before I moved on to question drilling at Exademy. The difference in my language comprehension on test day felt significant compared with the first attempt without a foundation.
D
DS IELTS Academic candidate for a UK scholarship, Jakarta
At first I thought General Training drilling at a test prep class would be enough. After two attempts without hitting the target, I tried Britemy first for a letter and essay writing foundation. My language became far tidier.
R
RH IELTS General Training candidate for Australian migration, BSD
My speaking was stuck at band 6 across two attempts. Britemy trained my fluency and lexical resource across part 3 abstract discussion. When I moved to Exademy for mock testing, strategy became easier to absorb.
