Britemy Signature

Academic Writing Coaching That Sticks to Your Text

Britemy Academic Writing tutors are academic educators who understand the scientific writing process. We pair you with a tutor who can unpack essays, journal papers, and thesis chapters with the right academic sensibility.

Many Indonesian students already write grammatically clean English sentences yet stumble on academic register and argument structure. Britemy closes this gap through coaching that touches argument mapping, IMRaD, and citations together, while tidying up sentences that still need editing.

1

Visual argument mapping

Every piece opens with a visual map: main claim, supporting evidence, counter-arguments to address, and the literature gap. This map becomes the anchor throughout the writing process, keeping your text from drifting without direction.

2

IMRaD structure and variants

We teach the IMRaD structure for empirical journal papers as well as variants for conceptual papers, review papers, and methodology papers. Different structures demand different argument flows; your tutor guides your choice.

3

3 major style guides

We go deep on the three major citation style guides: APA 7 for social sciences, IEEE for engineering and computer science, Chicago for humanities. Your tutor checks that your citations are consistent from in-text to reference list, without format slips.

4

Anti-plagiarism and Turnitin

We train three paraphrase techniques: swap vocabulary, change structure, and shift perspective. You learn to read Turnitin results calmly, separate common phrases from actual plagiarism, and revise so the writing stays original in an academic sense.

The academic writing ladder your tutor helps you climb
  1. Level 1Essay of 500 to 1500 words with a thesis statement
  2. Level 2Thesis chapter with IMRaD structure or a variant
  3. Level 3Q2-ready journal paper with complete citations
  4. Level 4Q1 manuscript with professional reviewer response

You are not required to pass every level. Your tutor adjusts the order to fit the writing type you are working on right now.

Tutor Credentials

Britemy Tutor Standards for Academic Writing Coaching

Britemy Academic Writing tutors are curated through a teaching interview, an academic material check, and verification of journal writing or review experience where available. We stay transparent about tutor backgrounds.

  • TESOL or CELTA

A share of our Academic Writing tutors hold TESOL or CELTA, two international standard qualifications for adult academic classes.

  • Master's or doctoral background

Some tutors have completed or are pursuing postgraduate degrees, so they understand academic writing dynamics from direct experience.

  • Journal publication or review experience

Some tutors have written for or reviewed in international journals, carrying sensitivity to the style that passes an editorial board.

  • Fluent across 3 major style guides

Tutors know APA 7, IEEE, and Chicago as the major style guides, and are familiar with Vancouver and Harvard for fields that require them.

Britemy does not guarantee journal acceptance or defence success. We prepare you to write with structure and citations that are more ready for academic scrutiny.

Method

How Britemy Trains Your Academic Writing

Our method emphasises a structured academic writing process, from the argument in your head to the sentence on the page. Your tutor guides you stage by stage so your writing stays solid from structure to citation.

01

Argument mapping before writing

In the first session your tutor walks you through mapping the writing's core argument: the main claim, supporting evidence, counter-arguments to address, and the literature gap your writing fills. This map keeps each paragraph on one idea and the whole piece pointing toward your central thesis.

02

Outline with topic sentences

Before drafting paragraphs, you build an outline with a thesis statement plus topic sentences per paragraph. Your tutor reviews the outline first before you expand into full prose. This staged approach avoids heavy revisions at the end and keeps the argument organised from the start.

03

Writing paragraphs based on IMRaD

You write paragraph by paragraph following the IMRaD structure for journal papers or a chapter framework for a thesis. Your tutor reviews each paragraph, making sure every sentence supports the topic sentence and every paragraph supports the main thesis.

04

Source integration drill

You practise paraphrasing paper abstracts from your field, composing citations in APA 7, IEEE, or Chicago, and integrating sources into your own argument. The drill builds anti-plagiarism habits and sharpens your literature synthesis.

05

Structural revision and polish

After the full draft is complete, you and the tutor check the big structure: does the introduction draw the reader in, are the methods reproducible, does the discussion answer the research question. Once the structure is solid, polish scans hedging, cohesion, and formal register.

06

Turnitin check and reviewer response

For journal submissions, you practise reading Turnitin results and composing a response letter to reviewers. Your tutor separates substantive reviewer comments from preference-based ones, and you build a revision that lands accurately.

Roleplay: Reviewer Feedback Response

Reviewer Comment Response

You receive comments from a Q2 reviewer who asks for extra literature review, questions the method choice, and requests clarification on limitations. Some comments are substantive, others are preferences. You need to compose a professional response letter and a manuscript revision that lands accurately.

  1. Which phrases acknowledge the reviewer's points without excessive deference
  2. How do you politely decline a comment outside the paper's scope
  3. How do you close the response letter to invite further revision

Pertanyaan Umum

Questions Students Ask Us Most

Can the tutor help with my highly specialised field?
We match you with a tutor fitting your field of study as closely as possible, covering social sciences, engineering, humanities, and sciences. If your field is highly specialised, the tutor can still support the language and academic structure side, while substantive decisions remain with you and your supervisor. IMRaD structure, citations, and academic register are cross-field.
How long does coaching take before one paper is ready to submit?
Time depends on the starting writing level, paper complexity, and revision rhythm. As a rough guide, a paper that already has an initial draft typically goes through eight to twelve coaching sessions during the submission season, with a few sessions dedicated to reviewer response when major revisions arrive. We do not commit to a firm date; the deadline lives in your academic calendar.
How does Britemy protect me from plagiarism?
We train three paraphrase techniques: swapping vocabulary, changing sentence structure, and shifting perspective. The tutor also guides consistent APA, IEEE, or Chicago citation practice. A practical rule is that if you reuse three consecutive words from the source, switch to a direct quotation with a citation. These habits produce writing that passes Turnitin scrutiny while remaining honest academically.
What if I need TOEFL Writing or IELTS Task 2 preparation?
Britemy Academic Writing focuses on academic writing for coursework and publication. For Writing test preparation such as TOEFL Writing, IELTS Task 2, or GRE Analytical Writing, we refer you to Exademy as the sister brand dedicated to test prep and score strategy. If you need both at once, we coordinate across the brands.
Can the tutor help with responding to reviewer revisions?
Yes, we provide dedicated sessions for unpacking reviewer comments, separating substantive requests from preference-based ones, and then composing a professional response letter along with a well-targeted revision. The tutor accompanies the process; academic decisions stay with you, your supervisor, and any co-authors.
Can coaching be delivered entirely online?
Yes. Most students choose online through Zoom or Google Meet because live document sharing lets the tutor annotate in real time. Online coaching also removes location constraints, well suited for domestic students spread across cities or those currently studying abroad.
Are my academic documents safe?
The chapter drafts, papers, and supporting data you share are treated as confidential. The Britemy team keeps your academic information private in line with academic coaching ethics. We do not use your writing as a public sample without your written permission, and unpublished research confidentiality stays protected.

Academic Writing Glossary

Academic Writing Terms That Come Up Often

Words and concepts often asked by students in their first Britemy session. Definitions are clear so you can use them right away.

Key term

IMRaD

The standard structure for an empirical academic paper: Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion. Standard in many international journals across sciences and social sciences.

Thesis statementThe main claim sentence that a paper or chapter sets out to prove. Usually appears at the end of the opening paragraph.
Topic sentenceThe opening sentence of a paragraph that carries the paragraph's main idea. It becomes the umbrella for the supporting sentences that follow.
APA 7American Psychological Association style guide seventh edition, the citation standard in social sciences, education, and psychology. In-text uses name and year.
IEEEInstitute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers style guide, the citation standard in engineering and computer science. In-text uses numbers in square brackets.
Chicago styleChicago Manual of Style, with two systems: author-date for social sciences and notes-bibliography for humanities.
ParaphrasingRewriting an idea from a source with different vocabulary, structure, and perspective, always with a citation. Three consecutive words from the source usually deserve quotation marks.
TurnitinThe plagiarism-detection tool widely used by universities to audit writing originality; it produces a similarity score that must be read in context.
CEFRThe European CEFR reference framework that measures English competence from A1 beginner to C2 near native; academic writers typically sit between B2 and C1.

  • Flexible rescheduling

Chapter deadlines and supervisor revisions often arrive suddenly. Schedule changes are allowed six hours before a session with no credit deducted from the monthly package.

  • Confidentiality of academic writing

Your writing is your personal intellectual asset. Britemy tutors are bound to keep the material you share during coaching confidential, in line with academic ethics.

Native vs Local

Native or Local Tutor for Your Academic English?

For academic needs (thesis, journal, conference), tutor choice depends on your field and publication target. Here is honest comparison.

Accent and pronunciation
Native

Truly native for international conference presentations. Plus value for overseas defense.

Local

Local tutor from abroad already equivalent for academic setting.

Britemy pick

Native if conference presentation target. Local sufficient for writing and discussion.

Academic writing style
Native

Native understands academic tone naturally (hedge language, cautious claim, formal register).

Local

Local tutor with PhD/publication experience understands academic writing, sometimes more structured.

Britemy pick

Both fit. Prioritise tutor with publication track record; native status is a secondary consideration.

Paragraph structure explanation
Native

Native intuitive, may not break down pattern (topic sentence, evidence, transition).

Local

TESOL/CELTA-trained local tutor good at explaining paragraph structure with concrete template.

Britemy pick

Local more pedagogical for beginners. Native for polish at advanced stage.

Field-specific vocabulary
Native

Ex-academic native understands field vocab. Look for one matching your field.

Local

Local tutor with your field background (science, law, economics) more relevant.

Britemy pick

More important: field experience, not native status.

Citation and referencing
Native

Native understands APA/MLA/Chicago naturally.

Local

Local tutor from abroad already familiar. Some can explain regional nuance (APA 7 vs 6).

Britemy pick

Both fit if tutor has peer review experience.

Fee and consistency
Native

Fee 1.5-2x local.

Local

Affordable fee, consistent.

Britemy pick

For 6-12 month thesis/publication program, local more sustainable.

Britemy Pick

Britemy default local tutor with publication/research track record in your field. Periodic native sessions to polish conference presentation or final proofreading. For IELTS Academic 7+ or TOEFL 100+ scores, transition to Exademy after fluency foundation solid.

Academic mentoring quality determined by tutor research experience, not native status. We match tutor to your field of study.

Pronunciation Drill

English Sounds Indonesian Speakers Find Tricky

Eight sounds that most often cause miscommunication for Indonesian English speakers. Britemy sessions train articulation concretely with IPA and minimal pairs, not by chasing native accents.

/θ/

Voiceless TH

Often swapped with /t/ or /s/

Tongue tip slightly out between upper and lower teeth, breathe out without vocal cord vibration.

Minimal pairs
think vs sink vs tinkthin vs sin vs tinthree vs tree vs freeboth vs boat vs bosspath vs pass vs pat

/ð/

Voiced TH

Often swapped with /d/ or /z/

Same tongue position as /θ/, but vibrate vocal cords. Sound is more vibratory and shorter.

Minimal pairs

/v/

V labiodental

Often pronounced /f/ or even /w/

Upper teeth touch inside of lower lip, vibrate vocal cords. Different from /f/ (no vibration), different from /w/ (rounded lips).

Minimal pairs

veryvaluevideoviewvoiceinvitetravelseven
/ə/

Schwa

The most common sound in English but often ignored

Mouth fully relaxed, tongue central, neutral short "uh" sound. Appears in unstressed syllables.

Minimal pairs

SH often pronounced as S in words like "she"

For /ʃ/: lips slightly rounded and pushed forward, tongue up to palate. For /s/: lips smiling, tongue near teeth.

Minimal pairs

sheshipshineshallwashpushfishnation
/ɪ/ vs /iː/

Short I vs Long EE

Bit vs beat, ship vs sheep often sound the same

For /ɪ/: short, tongue mid-high, mouth less wide. For /iː/: long, tongue front high, mouth in a wide smile.

Minimal pairs
ship vs sheepbit vs beatlive vs leavesit vs seatfill vs feel
shipsheepbitbeatsitseatliveleave
/æ/

Short A open

Does not exist in Indonesian, often becomes /e/ or /a/

Open mouth wide as if yawning, tongue front low. Sound is long and "flat".

Minimal pairs
cat vs cut vs cotbad vs bed vs budsad vs said vs sudran vs run vs renman vs men vs mun
catapplebadhappyplansathaveland
/-d/ vs /-t/ vs /-ɪd/

Ending -ed past tense

Often pronounced "walk-ed" should be "walkt"

After voiceless consonant (walk, kiss): /-t/. After voiced consonant (love, live): /-d/. After /t/ /d/ (want, need): /-ɪd/.

Minimal pairs
walked /wɔːkt/ (not wolk-ed)kissed /kɪst/loved /lʌvd/played /pleɪd/wanted /wɒntɪd/
walkedkissedwatchedlovedplayedwantedneededstarted

Britemy does not train you to mimic a native accent. What we train: sounds that cause miscommunication (thin becoming tin, ship becoming sheep). After 20-30 consistent sessions, these distinctions become natural.

Why Britemy

Why Students Choose Britemy for Academic Writing

One tutor per academic writer

The 60-minute session belongs entirely to your writing. Your tutor remembers the main argument, the chapter structure you are working on, and your style guide preference from session to session.

Coaching per chapter or paper

The session material is your own writing: the essay you are drafting, the thesis chapter that is stuck, the paper awaiting revision. Progress shows up directly in the document you actually submit.

IMRaD structure for journal papers

We go deep on IMRaD and its variants for conceptual papers, review papers, and methodology papers. You write with a structure ready to clear an editorial board.

Mastery of 3 major style guides

APA 7, IEEE, and Chicago are treated as equally important. Your tutor adjusts citation practice to your field's conventions and your target journal.

Turnitin awareness

We train three paraphrase techniques so your writing stays original in an academic sense. You learn to read Turnitin results calmly and to fix the writing when similarity is high.

Cross-link to Exademy for test prep

For Writing test preparation such as TOEFL Writing or IELTS Task 2, we refer you to Exademy as the sister test-prep brand in the Akselera ecosystem.

Substantive feedback on argument

Your tutor comments on argument, structure, and source integration as the main focus. You learn a way of thinking academically that carries into the next chapter.

Your first session as an S2/S3 student with a Britemy tutor. Bring one essay draft or thesis chapter to dissect.

0-10 min

Onboarding

Draft Discussion

You share the context: study programme, target journal or conference, deadline. Tutor reads one paragraph of your draft and asks clarifying questions.

10-30 min

Substantive Feedback

Argument-Level Paragraph Dissection

Tutor addresses 3 things: (1) is the thesis statement clear, (2) does the evidence support the argument, (3) are the transitions between sentences cohesive. It covers more than grammar polishing.

30-45 min

Language Focus

Hedging + Academic Register

5 hedging phrases (e.g., "This suggests that...", "One possible explanation is..."). You practise using them in your own sentences. Tutor checks natural feel vs forced formality.

45-55 min

Revision Plan

Concrete Revision Outline

You build a 5-item revision to-do list (e.g., tighten thesis, add source X, restructure para 3, cite APA standard). Tutor validates and offers efficiency tips.

55-60 min

Roadmap

Coaching Cadence

Based on your deadline, tutor recommends session frequency (e.g., 2x/week for a thesis-chapter marathon). Cross-links to Exademy if the target is IELTS Academic 7+.

Britemy academic sessions focus on argument and structure, beyond grammar proofreading. If your goal is a formal test score (IELTS Academic 7+), Exademy, our sister brand, is more appropriate.
